Canadian Research Institute for Law and the Family

The Richard Weiler Visiting Scholars Program

The Canadian Research Institute for Law and the Family established a program in 1989 to bring recognized experts in the area of law and the family to the Institute and the Univeristy of Calgary's Faculty of Law during sabbatical leave. The program was renamed in honour of our former board member, Dick Weiler (1942 to 1995), in recognition of his extensive work in the fields of social justice and social development.

The Program

The Canadian Research Institute for Law and the Family invites academics and practitioners working in the area of law and the family to visit Calgary and engage with us in a collaborative research project during their sabbatical leave. Visiting scholars will be provided with administrative support, workspace in our office, and access to our library and the facilities of the University of Calgary. Visiting scholars may have the opportunity to address the students and staff of the University of Calgary's Faculty of Law and may be asked to present on their research at the Institute's annual general meeting.

The Richard Weiler Visiting Scholars Program is presently unfunded. Participants will be required to arrange for their own transportation to and lodging in Calgary. Funding for research proposals satisfying one or more of the objects of the Alberta Law Foundation may be available from the Foundation on a project grant basis. Please contact the Institute at 403-216-0340 or crilf@ucalgary.ca for more information about the visiting scholars program.

The Institute is able, from time to time, to host students-at-law as part of their articles. For more information about the Institute's Articling Student Program, please visit the About Us page of this website.
